On Matrix, Louis Karchin and the listener are blessed with precise, vibrant performances by fully committed, excellent players dedicated to new music. The pieces were all composed in or since 2000. The release demonstrates a conservative, modernist-leaning thoroughly developed aesthetic. The songs carry a lot of emotional weight with modesty. [Karchin] writes idiomatic, expressive music that sounds as if it must be a pleasure for the performers to learn and play. The composer’s program notes are a helpful and thoughtful companion to the recording.
