Karchin Archive at The Sibley Music Library of the Eastman School of Music
The Eastman School of Music created an archive of Mr. Karchin's work and career in 2018. The first materials included approximately 3700 pages of manuscripts and sketches of original compositions.
A second installment of materials was added in July, 2024. These include programs of premiere performances of Mr. Karchins music, conducting performances, reviews of works, festival booklets and professional correspondence with publishers and colleagues. There are discs of Mr. Karchins commercially released CDs and an external hard drive with pdfs of all of Mr. Karchins published scores and parts to date.
Printed materials also document Mr. Karchins early work with Zeitgeist in Musik, the ensemble he co-organized at Eastman during undergraduate days, and the Harvard Group for New Music, which he co-founded (with composer Paul Salerni) at Harvard University during his years of graduate study. Documents and concert flyers relate to Mr. Karchins early work with the League-ISCM, of which he was president (1981-83) and then Chairman 1983-85). Additionally, there are minutes of early meetings of the Copland Heritage Society, of which Mr. Karchin was a founding member. The Society supervised the renovation of Aaron Coplands Westchester estate, now an artist residence and a National Historic Site, and minutes relate to the raising of funds for the renovation and discussions about the future residency program. There are papers and photos relating to the formation of the Orchestra of the League of Composers, the ensemble that composer David Gordon, flutist Sue Ann Kahn and Mr. Karchin organized in 2009. There are program booklets of the orchestras concerts between 2009 and 2024.
